Dear Members,
Here is a message from Seán Skehan to the membership of TCRFC.
A communication will follow from the Club outlining our next steps.
For now the most important thing to do is acknowledge Seán’s incredible contribution to Rugby in Terenure, thank him for everything and wish him all the very best for the future, especially in his role as Head Coach of the SCT in Terenure College.
The best of luck to the team in Cork tomorrow, and of course to Seán in his final game as Head Coach.
Will Moore, on behalf of the Rugby Committee
To the Members of Terenure College RFC,
It is with deep emotion that I share the news that this season will be my last as Head Coach of the 1st XV. This was not an easy decision to make, however after much reflection, I know it is the right one for me and my family at this stage of my life and career. While stepping away is difficult, I look forward to discussing this transition with you all in the coming days and weeks, and I will always be just a phone call away.
Words cannot fully capture what this club and community mean to me. Where do I even begin?
Before arriving at Lakelands in May 2019, I had heard so much about the famous ‘Nure’ welcome—the camaraderie, the hospitality, and the incredible people who make this club so special. I wondered if the stories were true. I need not have questioned it. From the moment I set foot in the club, everything I had heard became my reality. Being part of this club has been an immense privilege, and serving as Head Coach of the 1st XV has been an honour I never took for granted. It is, without a doubt, one of the most privileged coaching roles in the country.
Over six incredible seasons, I have been fortunate to experience the unwavering support, guidance, friendship, and patience of so many people. To those who welcomed my family and me, making us feel truly at home, I am deeply grateful. The friendships I have built here will last a lifetime, and I have always done my best to represent this club with pride—something I will continue to do in whatever way I can.
My journey to Terenure was an interesting one. Growing up in Clontarf and attending St. Michael’s College, I discovered my love for coaching while teaching at Glenstal Abbey School in Limerick, where I spent seven years. From there, my path took me to Garryowen FC, Munster Rugby, and finally, to Terenure College RFC. Arriving at Lakelands in 2019 as a young(ish), energetic coach, my ambition was clear: to help make TCRFC AIL contenders while playing an entertaining brand of rugby. In some small way, I believe I contributed to that goal. The successes of the 2023/24 season will forever remain among my fondest memories—the crowds at the Aviva, the atmosphere around the village in the build up and the unforgettable homecoming at Lakelands.
However, beyond the trophies and triumphs, what I cherish most are the countless moments, both on and off the field, that made this journey so special.
I will always remember the comfort of sitting in the club bar with anyone (or no one), the indescribable feeling of standing on the pitch knowing I was part of a community that never stopped cheering until the final whistle. The small, everyday moments mean just as much: post-match craic in the changing room with the backroom team, Sligo Jim directing us into parking spots and feeding us after training, Jude keeping the pints flowing, the legendary Bosco (RIP) flipping us off in the bar, Moggy’s late-night lifts, coffee at Up@Brews, and, of course, the Thursday Club. There are too many memories to list, but they all contributed to making my time here unforgettable.
Above all, it is the friendships and relationships that I value most, and I hope they continue, even if in a different capacity.
To those who have been on this journey with me—you know who you are, and we will speak in the coming days—but I must take a moment to thank some key people.
To the current and former coaches who stood by my side: Conor Gildea, Emmet MacMahon, Paul Barr, Simon Malone, Andy Skehan, Alex Dunlop, Ri Elers, Cathal Bannon, Michael Mooney, Martin Staunton, Robbie Carroll, Peter Shaw, Aaron O’Connor & Jack O’Brien, you are all experts in your field, and it was a privilege to work alongside you. A special thank you must go to the legend himself, Ian ‘Moggy’ Morgan, our Director of Rugby—this club would not be the same without you & I can’t thank you enough for all your guidance and support over the years.
To the management and backroom teams, your dedication never went unnoticed. Mark Hamilton, Stephen O’Neill, Mark O’Neill, Brian Elliot, Arthur Fitzpatrick, Paul Murphy, Richy McDonald, Leigh Porter, Billy Twomey, Billy Twomey Junior, Mark Hiney, Harry Moore, Alex Byrne, David Fox, Garrett Lynch, Chris Byrne, Rala, David Durkin, Stephen Paige, Michael Henry Hayes, Darren Holmes— thank you all for your unwavering support.
To my captains, Paddy Thornton, Stevie O’Neill, Harrison Brewer, and Luke Clohessy, thank you for your leadership.
To everyone who played a role in supporting the 1st team squad— Frank Walsh, Will Moore, Podge O’Donnell, Paul Haycock, Des McCann, Brian Fitzpatrick, Steven Slattery, Risteard Byrne, Paul Candon, Sligo Jim, Jude Brown, Sean Heslin, Marty Doyle, Tommy Darcy, Paul Crossan, Dave Lynagh, Alan Field, Paddy Fitzmaurice, TJ Durran and many more—I appreciate everything you have done.
From day one, this club’s ambition to be the best it could be was fueled by support from all levels—the rugby and management committees, bar staff, caterers, groundsmen, and volunteers who keep things running day to day, ensuring we have some of the best rugby facilities in the country. The energy of the children who take over Lakelands every Sunday morning is a testament to the coaches and volunteers who dedicate their time to making the minis program a success, laying the foundation for the club’s bright future. The minis & youths sections are thriving, the evolving girls programme is incredibly exciting to watch develop and Terenure Tigers remains a shining example of the community spirit that defines this club.
Finally, to the incredible playing group, past and present—too many to name—you gave everything: blood, sweat, and tears. We have shared some incredible moments together, and I cannot thank you enough for your camaraderie and relentless desire to compete. To the current squad, your talent is undeniable, and I truly believe you can go all the way next season. For anyone thinking of getting involved—whether as a player or in any other capacity—do it. This is a special group, on and off the field, and the future is incredibly bright.
This is not goodbye—just see you soon.
Best of luck to all teams next season, from minis to seniors and everything in between. I hope that this time next year, we can look back on another successful season—on and off the pitch—and that I will have the privilege of standing among the Terenure RFC Ultras as we bring the AIL 1A trophy back to Lakelands.
I will not be a stranger. My journey with Terenure continues just across the way at Terenure College, where the SCT will look to go one better in the 2026 Senior Cup. I feel now is the time to concentrate my efforts on the school programme and most importantly give more time to my amazing wife Aislinn & my daughter Harper.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you—for everything. The last six years have been an absolute privilege and the wider Terenure community has given me much more than I could have ever given it.
Thank you.
Seán, Ais & Harper
